A traditional Québécois dish, the Tourtière is a savory meat pie filled with spiced meat and a flaky crust, perfect for winter gatherings and celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet, cook the onion and garlic until translucent.
  3. Add the ground pork and beef, cooking until browned.
  4. Stir in the spices and beef broth, simmer for 10 minutes.
  5. Roll out the pie crust and place it in a pie dish.
  6. Fill the crust with the meat mixture.
  7. Cover with the top crust and seal the edges.
  8. Make small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  9. Brush the top with beaten egg.
  10. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
  11. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Best served hot with a side of ketchup or pickles.
  • Can be made ahead of time and frozen for later use.
