- 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (approximately 4 cups)
- 1 pound spicy Italian sausage, removed from casings
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for an extra kick)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F.
- In a large skillet, warm the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Introduce the spicy sausage to the skillet, breaking it up as it cooks. Brown thoroughly for about 7-10 minutes, draining excess fat if necessary.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Fold in the cooked sausage mixture.
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and layer half of the sweet potato slices evenly across the bottom.
- Pour half of the creamy sausage mixture over the sweet potatoes. Repeat with the remaining sweet potatoes and sausage mixture.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top. Bake uncovered for an additional 20-25 minutes, until sweet potatoes are tender and cheese is melted and golden brown.
- Allow the gratin to rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.

- For a creamier dish, add an extra ½ cup of heavy cream.
- Substitute spicy sausage with a milder version or turkey sausage for a lighter meal.
