  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 medium ripe pears, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan with butter.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and blend in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger until well mixed.
  3. Remove from heat and pour the mixture into the bottom of the prepared cake pan.
  4. Layer the sliced pears atop the brown sugar mixture evenly.
  5. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, whisking until well incorporated.
  6. In a separate bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and egg until light and airy.
  7. Stir in the buttermilk and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  8. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, being careful not to overmix.
  9. Pour the batter over the arranged pears, smoothing it out to cover them completely.
  10. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before flipping it onto a serving plate.
  12. Allow it to cool slightly before slicing and serving.
