- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
- 3/4 cup warm water
- oil for frying
- honey for drizzling
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Add in the vegetable shortening and warm water, then knead the dough until smooth.
- Cover the dough and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
- Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into squares.
- Heat oil in a deep-fryer or heavy skillet over medium-high heat.
- Fry the squares until they puff up and turn golden brown.
- Remove and drain on paper towels, then drizzle with honey before serving.
Notes
- For added flavor, you can sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top before serving.
- Make sure the oil is hot enough so the sopapillas puff up when they hit the oil.
