Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • oil for frying
  • honey for drizzling

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. Add in the vegetable shortening and warm water, then knead the dough until smooth.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
  4. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into squares.
  5. Heat oil in a deep-fryer or heavy skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Fry the squares until they puff up and turn golden brown.
  7. Remove and drain on paper towels, then drizzle with honey before serving.

Notes

  • For added flavor, you can sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top before serving.
  • Make sure the oil is hot enough so the sopapillas puff up when they hit the oil.
