Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon instant yeast
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F
- 4 large eggs, room temperature
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup Huevo de Toro tomatoes, diced (or substitute with any flavorful heirloom tomatoes)
- 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the warmed milk and eggs until well combined.
- Gradually add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough begins to form.
- Add the softened butter and continue to knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Incorporate the diced Huevo de Toro tomatoes, basil, parsley, garlic powder, black pepper, and red pepper flakes into the dough, mixing gently until evenly distributed.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently and shape it into a loaf or divide it into smaller rolls. Place them in a greased loaf pan or on a baking sheet.
- Cover the shaped dough and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
- Brush the top with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
- Allow to cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- For a cheesy twist, add 1 cup of shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese to the dough before baking.
- Experiment with different herbs like thyme or oregano for varied flavor profiles.
