A classic Russian dessert made with layers of flaky puff pastry and creamy custard.

Ingredients

  • 1 package puff pastry sheets
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Roll out the puff pastry sheets and cut them into rectangles. Bake until golden brown.
  3. In a saucepan, combine milk, sugar, flour, cornstarch, and eggs. Cook over medium heat, stirring until thickened.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Once the pastry is cooled, layer it with the custard until all are used.
  6. Whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and spread it on top.
  7. Chill in the refrigerator before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, allow the cake to chill for several hours or overnight.
  • This cake can be made a day in advance.
