Pouding Chômeur (Poor Man’s Pudding) is an irresistible dessert that combines a fluffy cake with a rich, sweet sauce.

  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 cups boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt, whisking until well blended.
  3. In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter with granulated sugar until fluffy and light in color.
  4. Gradually mix in the milk and vanilla extract until well incorporated.
  5. Slowly fold in the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined to avoid overworking the batter.
  6. Transfer the batter into the greased baking dish, smoothing it out evenly across the bottom.
  7. In another bowl, stir the brown sugar into the boiling water until fully dissolved.
  8. Carefully pour the sweet mixture over the batter, taking care not to mix them together.
  9. Bake in the oven for approximately 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the cake part comes out clean.
  10. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving, ideally warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top.

Notes

  • For a chocolatey version, incorporate 1/2 cup of cocoa powder into the dry ingredients and adjust sweetness as needed.
  • Add a teaspoon of cinnamon or nutmeg to the batter for a cozy, spiced touch.
