Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 cups boiling water
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt, whisking until well blended.
- In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter with granulated sugar until fluffy and light in color.
- Gradually mix in the milk and vanilla extract until well incorporated.
- Slowly fold in the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined to avoid overworking the batter.
- Transfer the batter into the greased baking dish, smoothing it out evenly across the bottom.
- In another bowl, stir the brown sugar into the boiling water until fully dissolved.
- Carefully pour the sweet mixture over the batter, taking care not to mix them together.
- Bake in the oven for approximately 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the cake part comes out clean.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving, ideally warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top.
Notes
- For a chocolatey version, incorporate 1/2 cup of cocoa powder into the dry ingredients and adjust sweetness as needed.
- Add a teaspoon of cinnamon or nutmeg to the batter for a cozy, spiced touch.
