Nanaimo Bars are decadent layered chocolate bars that are a delightful treat for any occasion.

  • Total Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Yield: 16 squares 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup crushed graham crackers
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/2 cup desiccated coconut
  • 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened chocolate, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 4 ounces dark chocolate, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Mix the crushed graham crackers, cocoa powder, confectioners’ sugar, desiccated coconut, and softened butter in a large bowl until the mixture resembles wet sand.
  2. Incorporate the beaten egg into the mixture, stirring until everything is well blended.
  3. Firmly press this mixture into the base of a greased 8-inch square baking dish, ensuring an even layer.
  4. In a small saucepan, melt the unsweetened chocolate along with 2 tablespoons of butter over low heat, stirring continuously until smooth.
  5. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
  6. In another bowl, combine the confectioners’ sugar, milk, and vanilla essence, then add the cooled chocolate mixture, stirring until silky and uniform.
  7. Pour this chocolate filling over the graham cracker base, spreading it evenly.
  8. Melt the dark chocolate with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over low heat, stirring until completely melted and smooth.
  9. Drizzle this chocolate layer over the previous layer, smoothing it out with a spatula.
  10. Chill the assembled bars in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until they are firm to the touch.
  11. Once set, cut into squares and enjoy the rich, layered delight.

Notes

  • Ensure the butter is softened for easier mixing.
  • Chilling the bars is essential for the layers to set properly.
  • Feel free to adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of confectioners’ sugar.
