- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (for garnish)
Instructions
- Mix the warm water, yeast, and sugar in a small bowl and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt, then create a well in the center.
- Add the yeast mixture, honey, and vegetable oil to the well and stir until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for approximately 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F and bring a large pot of water to a boil, adding 1 tablespoon of honey.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal portions.
- Roll each portion into a 10-inch long rope and shape it into a circle, pinching the ends together securely.
- Carefully drop the bagels into the boiling water, cooking for about 1 minute on each side.
- Remove the bagels with a slotted spoon and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Sprinkle sesame seeds and poppy seeds generously over the top of each bagel.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Allow the bagels to cool on a wire rack before enjoying.
Notes
- For a sweeter flavor, add 1 tablespoon of cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of sugar to the dough.
- For a savory variation, incorporate 1/2 cup of shredded cheese or fresh herbs before kneading.
