Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups masa harina
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup warm water
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the masa harina, sea salt, and baking powder until evenly combined.
- Pour in the olive oil and warm water, mixing with a spoon until a cohesive dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 2 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions.
- Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat until shimmering.
- Shape each portion into a ball, then flatten each ball into a thin disc using a rolling pin or tortilla press.
- Fry the discs in the hot oil for approximately 30 seconds per side, or until they turn a lovely golden brown and become crispy. Remove them from the oil and let them drain on paper towels.
- Once the tortillas have cooled slightly, cut them into triangles to make chips. Fry the triangles in batches for about 2-3 minutes until they are perfectly crispy.
- Place the chips on paper towels to absorb excess oil and sprinkle with sea salt while they are still warm.
Notes
- For an added kick, consider mixing in spices like cumin or smoked paprika into the masa harina before you start.
- For a healthier option, brush the chips with oil and bake them at 350°F for 10-12 minutes until they are crunchy.
