A spooky and delicious Italian Tiramisu Coffin Cake perfect for Halloween celebrations.

  • Total Time: 4 hours 30 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1 cup mascarpone cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur (optional)
  • Dark chocolate shavings, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9×13 inch baking dish by greasing and flouring it.
  2. In a sizable bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt, stirring until evenly mixed.
  3. Incorporate the softened butter, milk, eggs, and vanilla extract into the dry ingredients, mixing with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes until the batter is smooth and well-blended.
  4. Transfer the batter into the prepared baking dish, leveling the surface with a spatula.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan.
  6. Once the cake has cooled, use a sharp knife to carve out coffin shapes.
  7. In a shallow dish, mix the cooled coffee and coffee liqueur (if desired).
  8. Quickly dip each coffin-shaped cake piece into the coffee mixture, ensuring they soak up the flavor without becoming overly soggy.
  9. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream with the powdered sugar until stiff peaks form, then gently fold in the mascarpone cheese until smooth and creamy.
  10. Layer the soaked cake pieces in a serving dish, adding a generous layer of the mascarpone mixture between each layer.
  11. Continue this process until all cake pieces are stacked, finishing with a layer of mascarpone on top.
  12. Chill the assembled cake in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or ideally overnight.
  13. Just before serving, sprinkle dark chocolate shavings on top.

Notes

  • For a more whimsical look, freehand carve the coffin shapes.
  • Ensure the cake pieces are not overly soggy when dipped in the coffee mixture.
  • Chilling overnight enhances the flavor and texture of the cake.
