A delightful cake combining the rich flavors of dark chocolate and the zesty brightness of blood orange.

  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Zest of 1 blood orange
  • ½ cup fresh blood orange juice
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9×13 inch baking pan by greasing and dusting it with flour.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder, whisking until well blended.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and airy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Incorporate the eggs into the butter mixture one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then mix in the vanilla extract, blood orange zest, and juice until well combined.
  5. Slowly add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and finishing with the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just mixed.
  6. Gently fold in the dark chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  7. Transfer the batter into the prepared pan, smoothing the surface with a spatula.
  8. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. For an added touch, drizzle a blood orange glaze made from powdered sugar and blood orange juice over the cooled cake.
  11. For a gluten-free option, swap the all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free baking blend.
  12. Pair with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent dessert experience.
