A delicious twist on traditional baklava, filled with rich custard and rolled for an elegant presentation.

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pistachios

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan, heat milk and sugar until dissolved.
  3. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, cornstarch, vanilla, and salt.
  4. Gradually add hot milk mixture to yolks, whisking constantly.
  5. Return to the stove and cook until thickened.
  6. Layer phyllo dough on a baking sheet, brushing each layer with melted butter.
  7. Spread custard mixture over the dough.
  8. Sprinkle chopped nuts over the custard.
  9. Roll the phyllo tightly and place seam-side down on the baking sheet.
  10. Brush the top with remaining butter.
  11. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Let cool before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Allow the custard to cool completely before rolling for best results.
  • Serve with a drizzle of honey for added sweetness.
