Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup milk, warmed to 110°F
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup chopped pecans (optional)
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk (for drizzle)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for drizzle)
Instructions
- Mix the flour, salt, and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl.
- Activate the yeast by combining it with the warm milk and letting it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Incorporate the melted butter, egg, and vanilla into the yeast mixture, then pour this blend into the flour mixture. Stir until a cohesive dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for approximately 5 minutes until elastic and smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and allow it to rise in a warm area for about an hour, or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the filling by combining the chopped apples, ground cinnamon, brown sugar, and pecans (if desired) in a bowl.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F.
- Once the dough has risen, gently deflate it and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Distribute the apple mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Roll the dough tightly from one long edge to the other, then form it into a circular shape and pinch the ends to seal.
- Transfer the pastry to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Make cuts along the outer edge of the circle, spacing them about 2 inches apart, and gently pull each section outward to create a decorative twist.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and fragrant. Allow to cool for a few minutes.
- Whisk together the confectioners’ sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to create a smooth drizzle. Pour this over the warm pastry just before serving.
Notes
- For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a dash of nutmeg to the apple filling.
- You can swap out the apples for pears or mixed berries for a delightful twist.
- For a festive flair, sprinkle some cinnamon sugar on top before baking.
