Decadent brownies topped with rich chocolate and creamy custard, reminiscent of Boston’s famous cream pie.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for custard)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9 inch baking pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until smooth.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time and stir in the vanilla.
  4. Mix the flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt into the creamed mixture until just blended.
  5. Spread the brownie batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  6. For the custard, whisk together heavy cream, powdered sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until thick.
  7. Once brownies are cool, spread the custard over the top.
  8. Melt chocolate chips and drizzle over the custard layer.
  9. Refrigerate until set, then cut into squares to serve.

Notes

  • Make sure brownies are completely cool before adding custard.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for best taste.
  • You can add a sprinkle of sea salt on top for extra flavor.
