- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add sugar, oil, and eggs to the yeast mixture, and mix well.
- Slowly incorporate flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal pieces. Braid the pieces together and shape into a loaf.
- Place the braided loaf on a baking sheet, cover, and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the loaf with the egg wash.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
- Allow to cool before slicing.
Notes
- For a sweeter challah, you can add raisins or chocolate chips.
- Store in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
