This is a classic recipe for soft and fluffy challah bread, perfect for special occasions and everyday meals.

  • Total Time: 2 hours
  • Yield: 1 loaf 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add sugar, oil, and eggs to the yeast mixture, and mix well.
  3. Slowly incorporate flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal pieces. Braid the pieces together and shape into a loaf.
  7. Place the braided loaf on a baking sheet, cover, and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the loaf with the egg wash.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
  10. Allow to cool before slicing.

Notes

  • For a sweeter challah, you can add raisins or chocolate chips.
  • Store in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
